Espresso Beans

Espresso beans at Boxwood are the coffees we pull on the café bar every day. Tempo is the house espresso blend, deep chocolate and blackberry, built to work as a straight shot and to cut through milk. Headshot is the brighter option, pineapple and brown sugar, for people who like a juicy shot. Both are roasted to order in Westfield, New Jersey and come in 12oz, 1kg and 5lb bags.

Espresso the Way We Pull It at the Bar

There is no such thing as an espresso bean. There are coffees roasted and blended with espresso in mind, and these are ours. We dial them in on the café machines every morning, so what you buy here is what we serve.

Tempo: the house espresso

Tempo is a medium-dark blend with low acidity, heavy body and a chocolate finish that holds up under milk. It is the espresso in every latte and cappuccino at both cafés, and the one most home machines get along with. If you want one espresso to live on, this is it.

Headshot: the bright one

Headshot is roasted lighter and built from fruit-forward lots. Pulled straight it reads as pineapple and brown sugar with a long sweet finish. It is less forgiving than Tempo and rewards a machine with good temperature control. In milk it stays fruity rather than disappearing.

Grind and dose for home espresso

Choose the espresso grind at checkout and we grind it the morning it ships. If you have a burr grinder, buy whole bean and grind just before you pull. Start around 18g in, 36g out in 28 to 32 seconds and adjust from there. Let a fresh bag rest 5 to 7 days after the roast date before pulling shots, or the crema will be loud and the shot will run fast.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a coffee an espresso bean?
Nothing about the bean itself. Espresso is a brew method, and these coffees are roasted and blended so they taste balanced at espresso's high pressure and short contact time. Any coffee can be pulled as espresso, but lighter roasts tend to taste sharp.
Can I use Boxwood espresso beans in a drip machine?
Yes. Tempo makes a rich, low-acid drip coffee. Choose the drip grind at checkout instead of espresso.
Which espresso is better for milk drinks?
Tempo. Its chocolate and body carry through milk. Headshot works too if you like a fruitier latte.
How long should espresso beans rest after roasting?
5 to 7 days for the cleanest shots. Because we roast to order, your bag usually arrives inside that window.
Do you sell espresso beans in bulk?
Yes. 5lb bags for home and wholesale sizes for cafés through the wholesale program.
